How Social Media Has Changed Us

I just read a very cool article by Mike Laurie on how social media has changed how we think and do things. An interesting point that I never really thought about is how social media has changed our education system. The popularity of social media outlets such as twitter, facebook, and even simple text messaging require a basic grasp on reading and witting.

It stands to reason that children who read and write more are better at reading and writing. And writing blog posts, status updates, text messages, instant messages, and the like all motivate children to read and write.

A very interesting read.

  • I was just talking to wife about something similar the other night. Imagine a world without libraries. We are not too far from it now. Kids these days have access to endless amounts of information 24/7, without trekking to an old building to search through dusty shelves, just to discover the book they were looking for has been checked out.

Along with not ever having to worry about late fees, they can now copy text off a website into their own document and reword it to be theirs without ever having to use a typewriter and the always-needed whiteout.

Wow, did I just write "kids these days"?! I am officially old!
